Wcnday’s win in tho Malone Memorial Handicap at Stratford was not out of her turn as she had been racing consistently.
Two Aucklanders in Golden Wedding and Yaqui are said to be likely additions to the schooling list.
Owner-trainer R. Johnson has made a big improvement in the manners if Ridgcmount, who gave no trouble at Stratford. Ridgcmount won very easily in his onlv start, and looks certain to pay his way in better company.
Historic will be racing at Trentham and will pay watching if ho goes along as he has been lately.
Footfall is reported from the South to be standing up well to strong work. He may race at Dunedin, but will probably not be at his best fill later in the season.
One of the smartest hacks seen out Cor :i long time is Lady Quex, who wjn under the steadier of 0.12 at Stratford. ■She was turned out in splendid condition by E. George, and at the present time would be capable of winning in open company. On his form in the Christmas Handicap at New Plymouth, where he carried 5..10 into second place, Mint Leaf appeared to have a fair chance in the Stratford Cup with a stone less to carry. Mint Leaf stripped well for his latter engagement, and was going well in fourth place till he went, wrong five furlongs from home. Up till this mishap the gelding was galloping particularly well. The form of Orazone during the Christmas racing was the best she has displayed yet. At Fcilding she ran well, but obviously needed topping off. She is small, but stout-hearted, nr.d should be well fancied when the scale of weights suit. CANTERBURY GOSSIP. More than 40 horses from the Iviccarton stables have been nominated for the Wellington meeting, and with a big batch of Otago horses engaged the Couth Island will bo strongly in evidence at Trcnthara. Apart from tho uumber they represent most of the best performers are from that end. The Riccarton horses which raced at Auckland G. J. Pine has eased Silver Coot up
arrived home on Saturday morning. Tommy Dodd struck himself while running in the paddock and he has been eased up for a few days, for a,week or two, and has made another ’start on Paper Boy and Amourette. Front Bank has changed owners again, having been purchased by Mr. 11. Dobson, and she has gone into F. P. Claridge’s stable. The Warplane mare is a useful galloper when at her best and she should pay her way during the autumn. B. Longley has taken Heisler to Beefton where ho will compete in the hurdle races. Or. Salt, who did the Auckland meeting during the holidays, has gone over to ride him. Bed Heckle, the winner of the Great Northern Derby, will bo given an easy time for a few weeks, as'it is unlikely he will bo raced again until about Easter. Some of the Biccarton horses which raced at tlio Hokitika and Greymouth meetings have reached home, but most of them will compete at Beefton. Lucklainc and Double Mint, two Auckland horses, which have been racing at the West Coast meetings, will go into N. C. Price’s stable at Kangiora, with a view to competing at other southern meetings. The Auckland gelding Winsome Boy has been purchased by Mr. M. O’Brien. He was brought south by tho trotting trainer, W. J. Tomkinson, who will superintend his training in the meantime.
