At Frankfort to-day, Madame Naima Sahlborn presided at the International Conference on Modern Methods of Warfare. The conference was convoked by the International Women’s League for Peace and Liberty. The conference especially gave attention to the use of poison gas and the protection of civilians. Many international scientists and military experts were present. Professor Lowin, ‘of Berlin, condemned poison gas in war as cowardly. It was defenceless, because there was no antidote. It was so repugnant that it must be regarded as a crime against humanity. Professor Lewin’s description was so horrifying that many women left the hall in tears.
Professor Macartney, of Britain, stated that he thought it would he impossible to control the manufacture of poison gas for warfare. Tho only satisfactory method was to attack all forms of warfare and endeavour to remoVe the war spirit.
