When racing at three years old last season, Star God. the full-brother to the brilliant Star Stranger, only managed to gain a placo in one of the seven races he contested, but, though there is no great reason yet to elevate him above the moderate division, he gave evidence of being on the upgrade when he won the two leading events decided at the Hawke’s Bay meeting. It will be .interesting to note whether Star God’s performances will serve to bring him into full line as a worthy brother to Star Stranger.
Royal Saxon, who won'the Invcrcax gill Cup on Now Year’s Day, is a five-year-old gelding by Saxby from the Newmarket marc Heath Lass. When a yearling he was bought at auction for 50gns. by Mr A. Cambridge, but when he made his debut on the turf at three years old he figured in the nomination of Mr. J. Carter. In his racing at three and four years old Royal Saxon waa just a moderate, but this season »a has displayed better form and his winnings in stakes from-August J to January 2 amount to £1079.
W. D. Moroney was unlucky with his two hoi'ses at Ellerslie. Vertigern aufl Talisker. The bad weather and track conditions of the first two days prevented Vertigern from starting, and t>e Cup race took some of the steel out of Talisker, who subsequently ran two thirds, yertigern, when produced for the mile and a half on the third day looked a trifle too pretty, and he raced Accordingly. That race improved
him, fur on the concluding day, with none of the luck of the running, he finished verv stoutly aitei iccim .n-, a bad Tun, and was placed a head-heat for first with Concentrate. He wi I have to be considered now in the Wellington Cup.
Record nominations have been received for the Wellington Cup meeting, and what is more quality is decidedly in evidence. The Wellington club is not too fortunately placed with its Cup meeting coming so soon after the welter of holiday racing, but this year that fact has not prejudiced the class of the entrants. The Wellington Cup includes recent winners in Concentrate, Historic, Joy Bird, Mask, Pink Note, Panther, Royal Saxon, Star Area and Vertigern. In addition to these are the tried brigade, including old Rapine, Count Cavour, Oratrix, Hynanna, Set Sail, and Yoma. These by no means exhaust the possibilities of the field. Sprinting talent is particularly in evidence in the six furlong events, and they should be fine races, lhe popularity of the Douro Cup is again emphasised by a fine entry of good class hacks. Honour and Ceremony can me-ct again in the Wellington Stakes with Childsplay to test them out, and a sufficient number of supers to make up an interesting field. Aussie and Paganelli. The respective merits of Aussie and Paganelli have at times formed the subject of much conversation. In casting the weights for the Railway Handicap at the recent summer meeting at Ellerslie Mr. F. J. McManemin awardod Aussie 9.9 and Paganelli 9.3. Both were equally fancied, but, as is well known, heavy track conditions led to their withdrawal from the race on Boxing Day. The Newmarket Handicap, which came up for decision on thl third day, found Aussie (9-11) and Paganelli (9.4) produced to measure strides, and in the race that eventuated the honours resulted entirely on the side of Aussie, who beat his rival in convincing style with 71b. the worst of the weights. The merit attached to Aussie’s performance may be estimated by the fact that on the day following Paganelli carried 9.11 to victory and beat a good field in a solidly-run race. Up to date Aussie has contested 34 races and his record stands as follows: Unlst. 2nd. 3rd. placed.
Paganelli, who is a year younger than Aussie, has so far contested 25 races and his records reads as follows:
Lucky Bag, the three-year-old filly by Lucullus—Moonshine, carrying C. T. Keeble’s colours, was the outstanding youngster at Marton. With 7.5 he Won the Juvenile Handicap in hollow fashion, and 8.1 failed to make any appreciable difference on the second day. The opposition was not strong, but Lucky Bag won like a good one, nevertheless.
Singleton failed to win a race at Marton, but he should liavo bcatea tho outsider, Nucleus, on the first day. Ho was all over the course in the middle stages, and just failed to reach the winner, which was in Teccipt of over 2st. Nucleus ran practically unbacked by his owner-trainer, and the marc’s forward running in a good field surprised the local track watchers. F. Ehrhorn has been lucky with the cheaply purchased nags that have carried his colours and must be well ahead of things, financially, during the few years he has been dabbling in racing.
Kilmezzo failed to run on in the Stewards’ handicap on Tuesday last, but on the second day he made up his ground in fine style at the end and was going considerably faster than anything else in the straight. His win was well deserved, for he raced consistently throughout the holiday meetings. King Quex had the confidence of uis party each day and appeared to be unlucky when he. ran third in the New Year Handicap at Marton, in which ha should have finished second instead of third. lie recouped his followers on the second day, winning in fine stylo and paying a heally good dividend.
Mr W. P. Russell has evidently made a close study of the Foxton fields and tho Cup presents a very open appearance. The Derby and Marton Cup winner, Night March, will he a good favourite if he is accepted for, but there are three or four fit horses under him which will give him a real race for it.
The Ashhurst-Pohangina Club can be congratulated on the strength of its fields and the quality of the competition in open events. There is plenty of form here for Mr J. E. Ilenrys to frame his schedule of weights, which arc due on Thursday. With fine weather, tho club should enjoy an excellent meeting.
Sir Roy improved with each gallop at Awapuni, and was not over-done. Produced in the Aldworth Stakes on the second day only at Marton ,lie was always going like a winner aDd won decisively. He was,a good favourite, as he appeared to be well treated, but heavy backing for Singleton, Ruanui and Iveddar made the return bigger than expected. His appearance in the Herrington Handicap at Foxton would invest the race with a good deal of interest. '
Ruanui ran well enough at Marton to justify expectations in the near future. He struck trouble in both his races at the New Year, or he would have finished closer up than was the case
