KING HAS RESTFUL DAY AND SHOWS A SLIGHT IMPROVEMENT

Calcium Treatment BENEFICIAL RESULTS CLAIMED United Press Association —By Electri* Telegraph—Copyright. LONDON, Jan. 3. A bulletin issued from the Palace at 8.15 o’clock this evening states: "The King had a restful day and there was a slight improvement in the general contiition. The administration of calcium, based on a chemical examination of the blood, is producing beneficial results. ’ ’ The bulletin was signed by Sir Stanley Hewett, Sir Hugh Rigby, Mr. E. C. Dodds, professor of biochemistry at the London University, and Lord Dawson of Penn. Calcium Treatment’s Success HELPS TO REGAIN STRENGTH Received Wednesday, 9.20 p.m. LONDON, Jan. 2. The appearance of a new doctor, making eleven since the King's illness, coincides with tho first public announcement of the new treatment, which, is strictly secret. In accordance with the precedent of calling a specialist in each branch, Professor Dodds was called in to administer the calcium which was one of the measures determined during the consultation on December 2S. To-night’s bulletin is in first regarded as more satisfactory than those immediately preceding it. The slight improvement anxiously awaited has been noted. It may therefore be assumed that the King has successfully negotiated the recent check. This improvement may in some measure be attributed .to the calcium treatment. The fact that the physicians are able to report beneficial results is a hopeful sign, indicating one successful method of attack against the extreme weakness.' Momentarily it is not possible to reveal the manner in which the calcium was administered, but presumably one of tho objects is to make up for the lack of calcium in the blood. Drs. He watt and Woods did not call tc night, and tho rays were not applied. It is not known whether this course of treatment is concluded. The doctors signing the bulletin were in consultation for two hours. While they are still at the Palace the Prince of Wales arrived ,and left soon after eight. Professor Dodds, who is only 29, has been chiefly employed latterly at the Middlesex Hospital. The medical authorities point out that calcium may be administered by the mouth preferably or by injection. It is a tonic for the blood circulative system, thus assisting in relieving the strain on tho heart. The treatment is comparatively new but has been rapidly developed in tho last few years. The Daily Express medical correspondent says the doctor is probably administering the smallest quantities by injection under the skin. He says the whole question now is the ability of the King to regain the necessary strength. This is a matter of nourishment and sleep. Both in the present case are matters of difficulty. Restless Night, CONDITION UNCHANGED. Received Thursday 1 a.m. LONDON, Jan. 2. A bulletin issued at 11.15 a.m. says:— “Despite a restless night the condition of his Majesty remains unchanged from last evening.” The bulletin is signed by Sir Stanley Hewett, Sir Hugh Rigby and Lord Dawson.
