AWARDS GAINED.
Life-saving work and swipuning con* petitions are again occupying the attention of swimmers in Palmerston North. Messrs W. C.. Collier and & E. Small, honorary examiners for the Manawatu Life-Saving centre ?have ale ready-examined candidates from the Boys’ high school, Palmerston North Girl Guidos and Y.M.C.A. Life-Saving Awards. On Thursday evening, at the Palmerston North high school, Mr Small passed Jordan, Taylor and £. Gotten for their Awards cf Merit. The boys who had received their ’ coaching at the hands of Mr Worry, acquitted themselves well. On Thursday evening, Mr Collier tested candidates for the proficiency and bronze medallion. Some of the candidates have yet to complete their oral questions and water work. Patricia '•A, Edwards, Phyllis E. Nicholls, Zona M. Collier, Molly 0. O’Sullivan, Grace Wischnewsky, Eoso Wisctnewsky and Dorothy Babbington wore presented, under the tuition of Mrs 3, Vasoy. Last night, at tho Y.M.C.A., the following were put through their land drill and oral questions for the proficiency and medallion: S. Beverley, 0. Gdodjohn, F. Marks,' J. Coates, 0. Fuller, B. Carson,'M. A. Jobberns, D. A. Smillie, J. Hankins, A, Matthews, A. McDowell, and E. Kearns. The examiner, Mr Collier, commented very favourably upon the efficiency of the class and the good theorectical knowledge disclosed. As a result, Mr T. Twigge will gain his honorary instructor’s certificate. 1 An additional award of merit was yesterday presented to Not line BrownJohn, of College street school. This young swimmer fully qualified for tho award last year, but could not receive it until she had attained tte xnimimum age of 14 years. YM.O.A. SWIMMING CLUB Though early in the season, tho Y.M.C.A. swimming club has made good ?(togrcss in its club events. Last evenng the 33 1-4 yards junior, (36 2-3'yards senior final, inter-toam relay- race and a diving competition were held. Occasion was also taken to do useful practice in life-saving methods.
