HIGH SCHOOL BOARD MEETS.

At the meeting of the High School Board of Governors and Technical school committee last 'evening, there were present: Messrs. W. B. Blrnie (chairman), T. R. Hodder, M. H. Oram, W. F. Durward, W. L. Fitzherbcrt, J, A. Nash, M.P., and Mrs. Aitchisou. Boys’ High School. The Rector of the Boys’ High School (Mr. J. Murray) reported a roll of 312 and average attendance of 304. At the recent Royal Show, Hugh Simpson and Alan Collier gained first and second places respectively in the drawing examination. , In the Dominion Navy League essay competition, John AVoolf was next in merit in the junior section. At the the Teachers’ D certificate examination, N. Fletcher and H. Dixon obtained group passes. Mr. M. Cohen had presented to the school an interesting picture of Captain Cook, which he brought back from the Cook Centennial Celebrations at Hawaii. Mr. A. MeSweeney had presented a silver cup as a trophy for fielding in cricket and Mr. E. Wimsett medals to the winners in the boxing competition held at school. The school break-up ceremony will be held on December 19 and it is customary for the Board to invite the Old Boys’ Association to be represented by a speaker. Technical School, The Director pf the Technical School (Mr. G. G. Hancox) acknowledged donations from the following:—Kiwi Bacon Coy., Kairanga County Council, Premier Drapery Coy., Mrs. Coombes and Messrs. Barningham and Co., and E. D. Berry. At the Royal Show pupils had gained 03 prizes. In the Palmer prize competition, conducted by the Wellington Navy League, Noala Bishop came second in the junior grade for secondary school girls. At tho examination held in June this year, 1A students were successful, Alan C. Bull gaining a first-class pass and Karl L, Borreson a second-class pass in carpentry and joinery, grade 2. Girls’ High School.

Mrs. M. .Rhodes, acting principal of the Girls' High School, reported a roll of 197 with an average' attendance of 182.7. During the month the School had been the recipient of several valuable donations. Mr. J. Balsillie had presented a silver rose bowl for the winner of the junior championship at the school sports. The Parents' Association had given a set of Encyclopedea Britanniea. Thanhs were also due to Mrs. Birnie and Miss Fraser for prizes for the sports. In order to stimulate interest in the homo course, Mrs. J. Aitehison had promised a special prize. Hector’s Residence, A brief discussion ensued" regarding the rector’s residence when the chair man moved, to place the position beyond doubt, that the rector be informed that after December 31, the Board declines any further responsibilitv in the matter. The Board agreed, Mr. T. It. Hoddor dissenting. Technical Fees. • The Board decided to take no action when a letter was read from the Nelson Technical School asking for support in a protest to the Department against the increase in fees as fixed for evening classes, especially with respect to ap-

prentices. The Board s decision was arrived at in view of the fact that tho Department had already accepted tho Palmerston North Technical School’s scale of fees. It was decided to telegraph various High School Boards asking for their personal support in a deputation to tho ! Department and Minister to discusß tho [matter pf depreciation of school buildings and the advisability of having a uniform boarding fee throughout thft Dominion. Thanks. Votes of thanks were passed to ail donors of gifts and prizes.
