PENNY POSTAGE
POSITION IN BRITAIN. RESTORATION MOOTED, A BUDGET POSSIBILITY. Official Wireless. RUGBY, Nov. 19. It is understood that the Government is considering a reduction of stamp duty on letters, which is now lid, to the old rate of Id. Penny postage was introduced 57 years ago anil the rate was only increased to lift as a temporary measure to meet the financial stringency caused by thfc war. The Post Office has been asked by the Government to make a return of the estimated loss to the Exchequer of the reduction to Id. The business community has frequently pressed for sucSt a concession, and it is believed that the action of the Government indicates the probability that the restoration of penny postage may be one of the features of the next Budget. FINANCIAL ASPECT. POST OFFICE TO INQUIRE. LONDON, Nov. 19. The Post Office is ascertaining what would be the approximate loss of revenue, if penny postage were restored. If the inquiries are satisfactory from the Government viewpoint, Cabinet will seriously consider the inclusion of a restricted penny post in tho next Budget if the national finances permit.
