BRITISH OFFICER IN PORTUGUESE PRISON
SAVAGE SENTENCE. STRONG PROTEST BY L HOME GOVERNMENT. 360 DAYS FOR THEFT. British Official Wireless. Received Thursday, 7.0 p.m. RUGBY, Nov. 7. The question was asked in the House of Commons what action the Government was taking with the Portuguese Government regarding the delay which had taken place in holding the trial of Mr. Brewer second officer of the steamship Clan Lamont on a charge of theft at Lobito Bay, in Portuguese West Africa and regarding the severity of his sentence, which was 360 days' imprisonment and a fihe of £lB, or a further 60 days' imprisonment. Mr. Locker-Lampson, Under-Secre-tary of Foreign Affairs, replied that the British Ambassador at Lisboa had addressed strong representations to the Portuguese Government on November 3‘.
The Portuguese Government had promised an immediato investigation by telegraph. Mr. Locker-Lampson added that as Mr Brewer ,after tho first few days following his arrest was detained in tho local hospital, whore he enjoyd considerable freedom, there was no cause for complaint regarding the conditions of his incarceration.
