CHESS

(By “A.W.”) Following the usual custom, the members of the Palmerston North' Chess Club wore free from tourney play on .Tuesday night, their first meet- ■ ing of the month, and unanimously declared in fayour of a caterpillar match. Messrs Messenger, Richards and Thirtle volunteered' to ehgage the rest of fhe members,'and • played successive moves in the order named. They had the white and black pieces at alternative boards. Their opponents were Whitaker, H. B. Thurborn, Mitchell, Espiner, Stewart, K. fhorburn, Lattimore/Spiith and Fleck. All the games were completexl after , about two and-a-half hours’ play,'the final result being a tie, three wins, three’ draws and three ■ losses, 4J points. - The wins were scored by Espiner, Stewart and Fleck,the 'draws 1 by Whitaker, Mitchell K. Thurburn. One or two amusing errors were made owing to the novel conditions, but on the whole the play was very good, and there can be no doubt that the members are benefiting by these matches.
