FURNITURE PERFORMS MANY ROLES

Furniture which combines two or more functions seems largely to havi' taken the place of the rather cumbersome folding pieces which previously helped one room to do the work of two.

Here are some modern items which perform many roles:— , ). A kitchen tidy, which stands at table height and has a top wide and long enough to do duty as a table in a kitchenette. Below this comes a small cupboard with a spring-catch to its door so that it can be opened or shut with the minimum of effort. At the side of the cupboard is a. group of three small drawers equipped with small handles, and underneath again is ono long, capacious drawer to take dust sheets and ironing cloth. The piece has a light oak finish which makes it suitable also for use in a kitchen dining room. 2. A bedroom side-table, with part of the space below the top filled in to form a linen-bin.

3. A dressing stool with caned sides which also serves as linen-basket.

4. A washstand, fitted below with shelves and doors, so that it may serve as a cupboard for the household supply of linen.

5. A window seat -which is also a receptacle for sports outfits. 6. A sideboard, of which the sides form book-eases.,

7. An occasional table, with a “well” to take sewing and knitting. The well disappears inside when the table is needed for other purposes.

8. A kitchen maugic, which also serves as a kitchen table.

9. A dumpty that can be used as a receptacle for gramophone records, 30. An arm chair that is also an enlarged hat-box, its sides being fitted with wire-cones to take some halfdozen hats.
