THE RIVAL REFORMERS
ME. COATES IS CAUTIOUS. 1 “ Times ’ ’ Special. LEVIN, Last Night. ‘ Just now we have a great difficulty in Manawatu,” sliid Mr. Coates at his Levin meeting to-night. * ‘ Two fine men ! Mr. Linklater is a man whe stands high in the opinion of everybody who knows him. We have another candidate in Mr. McManaway—a man whom everybody respects and to whofti I owe a deep debt of gratitude. O*. many occasions previously he has been a loyal supporter of my late chief and has helped myself in many ways. It is difficult to advise the people what to do.
“The danger I'see is this: Mr. Linklater has a prior claim insofar as ho has represented the district for six years and therefore can claim an extension of that confidence.
“The people of the district must remember that if they want a Reform member to represent them in Parliament, they should make certain that the splitting of votes does not defeat the Reform candidate. A vote for the United Party is a vote for Labour.” Several voices: No I No’l
Mr. Coates: I repeat —a vote for the United Party is a vote for Labour They have no chance of capturing the Treasury benches, and a vote to put them into control will put Labour in a very much improved position. (Loud applause.)
