MANAWATU TRAMPING CLUB FORMED
ENTHUSIASTIC MEETING. For some time there has been 8 movement afoot to form a tramping club in Palmerston North, and last night the initial move was taken when Over 40 enthusiasts held an inaugural meeting and formally constituted the Manawatu Tramping Club. Although no club has been officially formed, a number of Palmerston North trampers have already organised several very successful trips, the most recent of which was to Mt. Arawa through the Katarawa Gorge. Now that the club' has become an accomplished fapt, frequent "hikes” will bo undertaken for the newly-formed body bids fair to possess an exceptionally large membership at an early date. Last evening’s meeting was characterised bj a spirit of enthusiasm which promises well for the future of the young club. The motion "that a Manawatu Tramping Club be formed,” was put by Mr A. W. C. Yorrt, who was unanimously voted to the chair. The motion was an enthusiastically carried, and the following committee was set up to formulate rules, and generally control the dotsinies of the club: Messrs W. Bendall, J. W. Birnie, J. Silson, G. Dawick, P. Vautier, D. Glendinning, and A. W. C. Yorrt.
Mr Lance Seymour, who has been one of the most energetic workers in the organisation of trips already accomplished, was elected secretary. Subscriptions were fixed at .10/- for gentlemen and 5/- for ladies, these to be payable at the earliest convenience of members.
The committee was directed to purchase all necessary equipment within the limits of the club’s funds and to draw up a programme of trips to be undertaken.
The question of a Christmas holiday hike was briefly discussed, Mr J. Sil son, one of tho most experienced trampers in the club, advocating a trip up Mt. Ruapehu and into the Kaimanawa Gorge, a region which, ho stated, had not so far been covered by a tramping club, although a party of well-known tourists had been over the ground and had spoken very highly of the scenery and general attractions of the trip. After some further discussion, it was decided to leave the matter of deciding on a Christmas trip to the committee. Twenty-five members signified theil willingness to make a trip to Scott and Bendall’s farm this coming week end, and arrangements were finalised for this outing.
