USEFUL HINTS

The following dressing will lie found useful for curing a slipping belt drive: Heat together about two parts of resin to one part of castor oil. The resin rapidly melts, and the solution should bo applied to the bolt when hot, as it cools to a thick treaclelike consistency and is then more difficult to apply. A simple method of holding a screwed stud is one that often serves when a direct hold in a vyco fails. By gripping the unthreaded part of the stud between the jaws of the pliers and pinching the latter in a vyce, a tight nut can be removed or some alteration made to the stud without damaging the threads. . A wise driver will straddle the ridge in the middle of a'''greasy” road, or keep one wheel in a whcei rut, to prevent skidding. When it is necessary to hold firmly a washer or other thin piece of metal in order to file it to reduce its thickness, the best plan is to press it into a piece of fairly hard wood by squeezing the two ’together in a vyce, so that the washer is imbedded to the extent of about half its thickness. If, then, the -wood bo either laid on the bench and located by two or three nails around, but not through it, or held between the, vyce jaws, the washer can not only be filed easily, but equally over its whole surface, for the surrounding wood forms a guide which prevents the file from being tipped unduly at either end. The following formula will be found to be useful for keeping the windscreen clear in wet weather: —One drachm of sodium chloride (common salt), one ounce of water, and two ounces of glycerine. Place a little of this solution on a piece of gauze, and wipe over the glass in a thin layer, using a downward stroke in putting it on. v To preserve niekle-plated fittings: Dissolve two or three inches of a hard wax of composite candle in half a pint of benzine. Clean the fittings and apply the solution with a soft rag or leather. It dries with a "frosted” finish, and protects the bright work fdam becoming oxidised during the winter months. An accidental touch does not easily remove the wax; but it may readily be removed, if so with a benzole-damped rag. Take edre that the solution does not come in contact with the paintwork or the polished woodwork. In some carburettors the petrol duet to tho jet issues from the float chamber close to tho "floor” of the latter, and an easy passage is afforded for particles of foreign matter. One can overcome the trouble by blocking up the original exit from the float chamber. The petrol outlet other at a higher level. A short piece of copper tube suitably shaped is soldered in holes drilled in the carburettor—one in the duct and another li inches above the bottom of the float chamber. The petrol outlet is at a chamber is now above the bottom, to which height sediment fails to reach; therefore it remains in the float chamber Without doing any harm.
