BAND OF HOPE COMPETITIONS
The demonstration concert and presentation of prizes in connection with the Palmerston North Band of Hope Union was held in Cuba Street schoolroom last night. Despite the inclement weather the.ro tvas a good attendance and an excellent programme was enjoyed. Bev J. D. McArthur presided and announced that Bev. J. E. Parsons, President of the Union, would bo there later in the evening to present the prizes. The following was the programme : Juvenile choir, Cuba St. Methodist; pianoforte solo. Lorca Perrin; recitation, Valda Blundell, vocal solo, Audrey Tily; humorous recitation, Elsie Hancox; pianoforte solo, Melvyn Creighton; humorous recitation, Miriel Hancox; vpcal solo, Euby Butler; recitation, Nancy Carruthers; pianoforte solo, Eric Martin; humorous recitation, Verna Wright; dialogue “The Juvenile Election,” Church of Christ; recitation, Eric Martin; monologue, Ada Cowlishaw; humorous recitation, Michael Knven; dialogue, “A Change of Opinion,” Cuba St. Methodist; inmental item, A Sundborn; recitation, Joyce McCoskery; pianoforte duet, Thelma Jackson and Geo. Scott; dialogue, “The Inherited Taint.” Church of Christ.
In presenting the prizes Bev. J. E. Parsons congratulated the various bands that had so carefully prepared their members for the competitions. The competitions had more than an entertainment value. Prom an educacational standpoint they were of great importance in the life of the children as well as of the community in general. He was pleased to announce that Miss Verna Wright, of the Church of Christ Band of Hope, was the champion and to present her with a handsome volume presented by G. H. Bennett and Sons. Miss Ada Cowlishaw was the runner-up. The banner had been won by the Church of , Christ Band of Hope with 1.9 marks per member. Cuba St. was second with 1.3 marks per member and St. Andrew’s third with 1.1 marks per member. Thanks were expressed to Mr. Wright, for his work in preparing the dialogues. Mr Wright, in accepting the banner, acknowledged the tribute to himself and hoped to see the competitions continue to prosper. Thanks were expressed to Cuba St. trustees for the use of the schoolroom, and to Berryman's for tnc use of the piano.
