Feared Forged letter Re Anglo-French Treaty May Have Grave Effect

Newspapers are featuring the British* Foreign Office announcement' that a sensational document purporting to be a letter from Sir Austen Chamberlain, to M. M. A. Briand, French Foreign Minister, anent Franco-British co-oper-ation on the sea and'in the air, which has been given prominence in the American press,'is a forgery. ' The letter cabled froin London ■ to New Yo.k purported lengthily. to> set forth that Anglo-French co-operation In tho Pacific and Far East was a neces sity. It also urged consultation between Anglo-French military van d air experts for joint action 1 in future disputes, ... j According to New York messages received in London to-night the /affair has' caused- a sensation. The Foreign Office asserts that there was ho communication even remotely in the sense suggested. i . : The Dally Express points out that any strong feeling that American interests are likely to be affected by the agreement may result in .the Senate wrecking the Peace Pact just as it wrecked America’s participation In the League of Na- : tiohs in 1920.
