HOKOWHITU SCHOOL COMMITTEE MEETS

The monthly meeting of the Hokowhitu school committee was held last evening, Mr J, T. J. Heatlcy, presiding. Also present were Messrs G. Pattle, G. Lane, M. Voss, W. Dudley, C. D. Hepburn, W. Woodroofe, A. J. Shailer and C. H. Amos (secretary). On behalf of the Huia Social Club, Mr. W. S. Woodroofe, handed over £l3, as a donation towards the ground improvement funds. A further £3, Mr. Woodroofe stated, would be handed over, shortly, bringing the total donation up to £lO. A veto of thanks was carried by acclamation. A vote of thanks was also accorded the headmaster fot his work with the school’s midget rugby team. Remit For School Committees, It was decided, on the motion of Mr. Woodroofe, to forward a remit to the Combined School Committees Association, advocating the formation of an association to enable all school committees in the town, to purchase their coal and firewood wholesale?'. In advocating this step, Mr. WoodToofc stated that it was, in his opinion, a money saving move. All other towns throughout Npw Zealand had adopted this method of purchasing fuel for their schools. After a brief discussion, it. was decided to call a special meeting of all those interested to discuss promotion of a fancy dress ball for the benefit of

the school. The date of the meeting was fixed for Monday, August 6. '"Headmaster’s Report. 1 The headmaster, Mr. H. F. MeClune. reported that for the past month, the average attendance had been 303, with a total roll of 373. The poor attendance had been due mainly to the prevalence of influenza. The thanks of the school were due to the committee' foi the erection of a set of goal posts, which were a decided improvement. The school football team was to meet West End school in the final ■of the “B” grade school rugby competitions. The report also enumerates a number of internal requirements for the school.
