The first sod of the Eotorua-Taupo railway was turned unofficially yesterday, work being commenced five miles out on earthworks. Mon are being put on as the work opens up and accommodation is provided.
In the Auckland Supreme Court yesterday .Henry James Shepherd, charged with breaking and entering a dwelling at Kaeo, with intent to commit a crime and with being found on premises at night without lawful excuse, was found guilty on the second count with a strong recommendation to mercy on account of a physical disability. Ho was admitted to two years ’ probation, and is to pay the costs of the prosecution. Mr. Justice Blair waa satisfied that prisoner had no felonious intent.
Three sets of moa bones have been discovered on the property of Mrs. P. F. Wall, of Tcuri, states a Danncvirko message. The manager of the property, Mr. J. E. Thomson,' was engaged in ploughing operations when the horse became bogged. In digging to free the animal, Mr. Thomson struck what he thought to be a log, but a closer inspection showed that it was a large moa bone. A further examination unearthed three sets of leg bones and it is thought ' that there may yet be further skeleton remains.
The United Political Party has chosen Mr. Kenneth M'Lonnan to contest Wellington Suburbs, and Councillor John Burns to contest Wellington South.'-' During the month of July the estates of the following deceased persons in the Palmerston Nort hdistrict were accepted, for administration by the Public Trustee —Samuel John Birch, Henry Burrell, George Burt, Arthur John Joblin, William John Killcn, Eobert Hughburn Newth, Eobert Frank Wood. Daniel Darwin Doyle, aged 41, letter sorter in the Post Office, ploadea guilty in the Police Court at Wellington yesterday to the theft of three letters containing in all £4/5/-. Accused had been,employed as a sorter for the past 20 years, and ho attnouted his lapse,to a severe illness with attendant financial obligations.
