EXCELLENT BOXING DELIGHTS CROWD AT BULLS’ TOURNAMENT

Interesting Bouts Are ) Order of the Evening PALMERSTON BOYS HOLD THEIR OWN Last right tho Eangitikei Amateur Boxing Association staged a very successful amateur boxing tourney at Bulls when some excellent bouts were witnessed. Except in tho middleweight contest between Hepburn and Barber, the contestants were very evenly matched and provided really interesting contests. Tho officials arc to be congratulated upon the great success of their venture, having gone to much trouble in securing the best amateurs available. After tho tourney tho visitors and competitors were very hospitably entertained at supper. Mr. Oxley, on behalf of the Pahiatua Boxing Club, took tho opportunity of presenting the medal for tUe most scientific display at tho recent Pahiatua tourney to J. Hepburn, and to compliment the Eangitikei Association on their good display. He also announced that another tourney would bo held in Pahiatua early in September, Mr. A. A. Woods, on behalf of the Manawatu Boxing Association, also complimented tho officials for the lino night's sport provided, and extended a hearty invitation to them to tho Casey v. M‘ Donald contest on August 8. ••• The officials who kept things going With such a swing last night were as fol-* lows: Keferee, Mr. E. Manly (Wanganui) ; time-keepers, J. B. Gaisf ord and B. J. Precklington; gong steward, Mr. P. M‘ Brearty; call steward, Mr. E. Wilson; hon. surgeon. Dr. W. S. E. Dick president, Mr. H. M'Manaway; secretary, Mr. D. Hayes. The bout’s were as follows: "4 ' . . Paper-weight, The proceedings opened with a sparkling exhibition of three two-minute rounds between tho two Gordon brothers, of Patea. These ten-year-oISs gave a scientific and sparkling display. . Light-heavyweight. B. Brant (Paimerston North), 12st, and E. Cutelli (Wanganui) 12st. 71b. next climbed through tho ropes. Tire first round opened at a fast clip, both stood too to too and mixed it with a will. In tho second, Brant h lomgdr reach, enabled him to land more frequently and ho rocked his man with hard lefts and rights to the jaw. Cutelli endeavoured to come back in round three but Brant had too long a reach, tho gong bringing a welcome respite to Chtelli. Solid exchanges marked the final round, but Brant connected more often and deserved the decision, which was in his favour.

Paper-weifehts. . / Two clever .paper-weights from Awapuni, W, Broughton and K. Voitrc, both sst, 51b. next stepped into tho ring. Voitre was tho early aggressor and some lightning exchanges took place._Broughton improved in the remaining two rounds, and a drawn decision met with popular approval. , - ; : Lightweight. ', 1 - 4, Gandy (Palmerston North) 10st thpn met D. McLennan (Marton) lOst over three two-minute rounds. M‘Lennap opened up quickly but Candy, steadiedfhim with, solid lefts and rights. The second round was very even, M'Lennan Using both hands, but met solid counters from Candy. The Palmerstonian Tasted better in the ,last round and took the decision. Fly-weight. - Two more Awapuni lads, C. Broughton, 7st and E. Stratton, 6st 121 b., provided the next mill. Stratton was the parly starter, but met a cool boy in Broughton, Stratton forced, the fight again in round two, though Broughton Countered nicely. Broughton opened ixp in the third round and made up the leeway, the referee being unable to separate" them. Bantam-weight, , S. Gray (Wanganui) and J. O’Reilly (Feilding) both Bst 71b. were the next in tho arena for a three two-minute round bout. Gray started out to make it a one round job, but O’Reilly had a good smother. Gray went after his man all through tho second round, connecting with clean lefts to the head and rights to the body. Gray was too clever and too aggressive and won by a comfortable margin. Lightweight. After the interval, D. Price (J’tviding), lOst. lit., and A. Paddy (PalmeVston North) 9st. 111 b., were seen ift action. Paddy opened up well, connecting with clean lefts and rights to tho head. Price came in the second round with a beautiful left and solid blows 'were exchanged. Both .waded into it .during the third round, Price with the left and Paddy with ,thc right. Price gained a narrow decision. . The Star Bout. The star bout of the evening of four two-minute rounds was between E. Oxley, Pahiatua (8.13) and E. J, Mercer, Patca, (9.1). Both opened up at a fast clip and displayed clever work. Oxley having the. better of tho long range work but Mercer revelling in the close stuff. Clever work was shown by, both in the second which was fast and very even. The third round saw Oxley hitting clean scoring blows, while Mcrccf got away with many kidney blows and “rabbit-killer” punches. Employing the same tactics in the thrilling last round Mercer was lucky to get the decision from a better boxer.-Middle-Weight. J. Hepburn, Feilding (11.7) and J. Barber, Foxton, (11.4) met over a four two-miniftc course. Hepburn was far too quick and tpo clever for the Foxton lad wfib stood up gamely though outclassed. The referee wisely intervened after the third round and awarded the bout to Hepburn. Light-Weight. Norton, Wanganui, (9.13) and Bert

O’Keefe, Palmerston North, (9.12) met over three rounds in the last bout of the evening. Karton had slightly the better of (the first round, but O’Keefe shaded him in .the second. ; A fast even third round caused the referee to award another popular draw. HARRY CASEY OUTPOINTS ' AUSTRALIAN, JACK CARROLL Per Press Association. 'WELLINGTON, Last Night. Harry Casey, middle-weight champion of New Zealand, beat Japk Carroll, welterweight champion of Australia, on points in a fifteen-round bout to-night. The decision met'with a very hostile demonstration from a big section of the audience. The chamuionshiu was not at stake.
