NOTES OF THE DAY
“You can’t throw dynamite about like a bale of wool,” said Mr. H. H. Sterling, general manager of New Zealand Railways, in speaking at Feilding last evening on national transport problems. The speaker was answering a suggestion for a common rate for all goods and made the above remark to illustrate that the carriage of dynamite required special facilities as against wool and therefore cost more to transport. Again, while the carriage of a ton of feathers would probably require a whole train a ton of lead would only occupy a truck. “1 don’t hesitate to say that more per cent, of the passenger motor traffic to-day is uneconomic,” said Mr, H. H. Sterling, general manager of New Zealand Railways, when speaking at Feilding last evening. The speaker assured a large audience that the Railway Department knew what these services cost, and in many cases just how long many of them would endure.
