Mr. W. Harrington, who has been in a private hospital for a few days, is making satisfactory progress and hopes to bo out again on Monday. ,

The Horowhenua Power Board, yesterday morning granted three months' leave of absence to Mr. W, H. Gunning, of Shannon, on account of his continued ill-health. >• The death has occurred at Mastertpn of Mr.' Levi Devonport after a short illness. Deceased was born in Sputham, Warwickshire, England, in 1854, and arrived in New Zealand by the sailing ship Waikato in 1874. After 'a short time in Wellington, Mr. Devonport went to Eeatherston in 1875, and remained in the district thereafter. < }

Tho funeral -took place at Sydney on Thursday of Sir James Fairfax, a member of the Sydney Morning Herald proprietary, and was largely attended, representatives of the State Governor, Federal ’and State Governments and Parliaments, and all sections of the community being present. Mr. P. Selig represented the New Zealand Proprietors’ Association and the New Zealand branch of the Empire Press Union. Oflicers have been awarded the Colonial Auxiliary Forces long-scrvic« medal as under: Lieutenant-Colonel L G. Ohaytor, M.C., Nelson-Marlborough Mounted Eifles; Major G. N. Taylor. Nelson-Marlborough Mounted Eifles, Major A. H. Wright, Hawke’s Bay Eegiment; Captain W. F. Sefton, North Auckland Mounted Eifles; Lieutenant G. G. C. Hornig, Manawatu Mounted Eifles; Quartermaster (Major) E. J. J. Welch, Hawke’s Bay Eegiment.
