WHIPPET RACING
Activities in Manawatu Last night a commiteo meeting followed by a general meeting of the Manawatu Whippet Club was held. Matters of interest in respect to tho club’s progress and activities were discussed. Commitee Meeting. There were present Messrs. F. Cousins (in the chair), G. Eemington, E. Robinson, L. s G. Olliver, C. Hausmann, E. Cousins, C. Aitchison, and A. E. Cliffe (secretary). The resignations of Messrs. 0. Hausmann and E. Cousins from the commiteo on account of other ties were accepted with regret. .The following were elected honorary members: Messrs, A. E. Hansel, E. Zaloum, Donne, H. Stewart, and A. M. Williams. Mr. Earle E, Wimsett was elected an active member. July Sweepstake Meeting. The grounds committee reported tnat at To Matai a track of 150 yards could be prepared. It was therefore resolved that the "club’s sweepstake meeting on July 25 bo held in conjunction with the Manawatu Hunt Club’s point-to-point meeting at Te Matai, provided that the sub committee appointed came to satisfactory arrangements with the' Hunt Club With reference to preparing the necessary track and conveying the dogs there. The chairman and secretary were (appointed to complete tho negotiations, not later than July 10. . ’ / - Challenge Race at Wellington. It was resolved that the secretary write to 'the Wellington Kennel Club stating that the Manawatu Club were prepared to participate in a challenge race, North v. * South Island whippets (four from each island) at the Wellington winter show, provided tho Wellington Kennel Club were prepared to pay the travelling expenses-of owners and whippets and that the amount of tho cash prize for the challenge stakes bo £2O. Cup Meeting on Labour Day. It was resolved to hold the cup meeting on the Showgrounds • on October 22 (Labour Day). Messrs. Olliver, Aitchison arid the secretary were appointed a sub committee to arrange the necessary preliminaries. All new .owners were placed on tho membership list and the transfers or dogs approved. , General Meeting. A good gathering attended the general meeting of the club, Mr. F. Cousins occupying the chair. The chairman reported that matters were well in hand for a permanent track. As this track at the Sportsground would cost approximately £25 ho suggested that a charge be made for'training tho dogs on the track. Mr. Aitchison elaborated upon the chairman’s remarks, stressing the need for funds and pointing out the advantages of the permanent track. Members would have the right to use tho track at any time. A resolution was passed that it be a recommendation to the committee that each owner give a donation toward the preparation of the permanent track. Tho sum of £ls was promised by the active members present. It was also reported that several offers had been made from A. and P. Associations to put on exhibitions. Hawera and Wellington had already applied and an application from Dannovirkc was expected. Another good suggestion was that the top battens of the hurdles be padded.
On the motion of Mr. Aitchison, it was resolved that the club send on a remit to the National Whippet Association that tho weight -limit be 281 b., also that a delegate from the Mauawatu Club be sent to the annual meeting of the National Whippet Association. v Weight Limit. It was resolved that a remit bo im-‘ mediately forwarded, to the National .Whippet Racing Association that Rule 7 dealing with the 261 b. weight limit be deleted and; the following substituted: That in the interests of whippet racing in New Zealand racing whippets be divided into two classes up to 221 b. in weight, and over 221 b. weight, to 281 b. All dogs exceeding 281 b. to be disqualified. This rule not to bo re-con-sidered earlier than the August meeting of the National Whippet Racing Associatioh in 1931. - -
