ENGLISHWOMAN'S PLUCKY TOUR, After a tour round the world, lasting six years, and spent in painting pictures Miss Hilda M. ‘Gordon, an artist, from Shanklin, Isle of Wight, has jlist returned to England. Since 1922 Miss Gordon has covered between 20,000 and 30,000 miles, painting pictures and selling them as she went along. Miss Gordon said she left England for the Dalmatian coast expecting to be back within six months, “but,” she added, “I found travel so much to my liking that I decided I would venture further, painting as I went. “I have been travelling almost continuously since 1922, and have visited: Crete, Egypt, Kashmir, Burma, Siam, Sumatra,-China, Korea, Japan, Honolulu, and the United States. “I have painted Royalty and many Indian maharaja’s,” Miss Gordon continued. “The King of Greece was my first Royal subject, and: I was also commissioned to. paint the King of Siam’s cremation, a picture which was afterwards bought by members of the King’s household. ; <: Maharajah’s Help. > “During my stay in Central India I met the Maharajah of Dhar, who learned with interest, of my. hope of painting the ruined city of Mandu, that lay in the. heart of the treacherous jungle. v ‘ ■ ‘ 1 So that I should not be compelled to give up my ambition, he loaned' mo
a number of servants, guides, and guards for a fortnight. “ During that time I was the only woman in the party, but I had no fears. The natives, with their bows and arrows, were always ready for any emergencies and at night the camp was surrounded by great fires as a protection against the animals. ’ v “My journey from India to Kashmir,” Miss Npnrdon continued, “o’E-i cupied three months, and was made by yaks over mountain paths.
S “Neither my servants nor I knew the way, but the yaks .did, and we arrived safe and sound.”
