STRAIGHTENING THE WAIMAKARIRI RIVER STATED BEST PLAN
KEEPING CHRISTCHURCH SECURE FROM FLOODS Per Press Association, CHRISTCHURCH, Last Night. A report hy Sir Alexander Glbh, eminent English engineer, on flood control of the Walmakarlri River was before the Waimakarirl Trust to-day. Sir Alexander Gibb was asked to report on the best methods of controlling floods and averting danger from the city of Christchurch, and he had before him a report on the same subject by the. Trust’s engineer, Mr F. C. Hay. Sir Alexander Gibb agrees with Mr Hay on some essential points. Mr. Hay’s scheme provided for the straightening and shortening of the river in its last roach to the sea, which involves two diversion cuts of one mile and two miles. Sir Alexander Gibb agrees with these proposals. He docs not agree with .schemes for the trapping and- holding of shingle w the higher reaches of the river for the protection of Christchurch. Ho suggests longitudinal embankments or levees which should be planted to ensure stability.
