CHURCH’S INTENTION RUBRIC OF PRAYER BOOK BE ENFORCED
Primate Appeals for Passage in Commons Aust. Press Assn.—United Service. LOND.ON, Juno 6. “If Parliament again rejects the Prayer Book, the prospect of confusion and spread of lawlessness looms large and ugly," says the Archbishop of Canterbury in a letter appealing to members of Parliament to adequately consider the conditions under which the revision has been carried out. Tho Primate emphasises his belief that tho Prayer Book, which is the labour of many years, will serve in the Church of tho twentieth century the highest need of the varied groups of worshippers. He cannot easily believe that the vehemence of a small minority consisting of a strange companionship of extremists on either side will be able to thwart tho wishes of tho whole central opinion which have not been lightly reached. He believes the book will be a rallying point for a rich and splendid unity. : The Archbishop of Canterbury denies that the consecration prayer in the alternative Communion service is inconsistent with Reformation principals. “It is our intention, with the cooperation of the clergy and laity, that the rubric shall be obeyed. So far as I am concerned, no effort to secure peace and orderliness will be lacking. “I am an old man; old men dream dreams. My dreams for the world I will soon be leaving are rich in hope. I believe that the confused questionings of average people are not hostile to the old faith.
“My heartfelt prayer is that it may somehow, not least through the new Prayer Book, be helpful to the younger folk.”
