HOUSING OF CATTLE
PROVISION FOE WINTER. Much interest continues in the scheme for the winter housing of cattle on the Hauraki Plains. Two sheds are already in the course of erection on the properties of Messrs L. S. James of Kopuarahi, and J. Flynn, of Turua. It is probable from inquiries made by farmers for plans of the buildings that other sheds will shortly be commenced. Two types of shed have been selected to carry out the scheme, which was thoroughly and successfully tested by Mr. James during the winter of 3D27. The first provides for the accommodation of 40 cows in 20 stalls, each of which accommodates two 'animals, the food for which is supplied from a feed waggon running on rails down the centre of the building. This kind of shed also has accommodation for cattle requiring medical treatment. Hay and other fodder is stored in a loft. The second typo of shed is designed to meet the requirements of the small farmer. There is accommodation for 24 cows, with milking shed attached. The cattle face the centre and are fed from a hayrack running through the middle part of the shed. Each stall has a box for the feeding of root crops and concentrated foods. A simple arrangement of chains gives the cattle quick release from the feed boxes before being turned into the milking shed.
