COMMUNISM IN CANADA
SERIOUS ALLEGATIONS. FORTY SCHOOLS AT WORK. VANCOUVER, May 2. That there are forty Communistic schools in Canada, and that thousands of children are daily receiving an education in. the tenets of a faith that threatens democracy, were charges made by Senator Beaubicn, of Montreal, in a debate in the Senate last week. Senator Beaubien charged the Government with failure to take adequate steps to control the situation, even after the mounted police had reported in detail on, conditions existing, and after .clergy and laity had brought evidence of the peril 'to both good government and Christianity. Senator Dandurand, replying for the Government, said the latter was officially aware of the conditions but could not interfere, as the question of prosecutions rested with the Provincial Governments. Senator Beaubicn retorted that the Federal Government had power to deport offenders, adding that the fact that Communism was most active among newcomers was proof that the Government was not taking sufficient precautions. Senator Beaubicn’s restrictions are supported by Bishop Hclenowski, who has a knowledge of Continental Communists. He declared that the Communist movement in Canada was a serious menace. A prominent Roman Catholic prelate, Abbe Casgrain, dc-' dares that Communism is being actively preached from oast to w r est of Canada, but that the chief activities were in the west, where the Coutinehtil population predominates. The Communistic press of Wiunepcg was quoted by Senator Beaubicn to show the progress of the movement. Teachers in Northern Ontario have warned the Government of that province that those districts wore flooded with Communistic literature, and that attempts were made to influence the
minds of tho children. In Ukranian schools—there arc 115,000 Ukrauians in Canada—Communism, it is said, is openly taught.
