DANGERS OF TOY PISTOLS
Scotland Yard is concerned about the increasing number of dangerous toy pistols being sold in Britain. That these can be converted into lethal w eapons has been proved by a mechanic, who lias bored a barrel and two chambers in a‘‘oyt” vfl.. pa..q hCh chambers in a "toy” and fired bullets that penetrated a" plank Jin. thick at 00ft. range. Summonses against tradesmen for selling these firearms contrary to law have been dismissed by magistrates. The only time the police can protect the public, apparently, is w'hen the Highways Act, which prohibits the use of any kind of firearm, whether with Jive or blank cartridges, within 50ft. of a highway, is contravened. An official points out that a recent murder was committed with a pistol little larger than those which arc sold as toys. “By cutting the barrel or dialing a bore,” lie says, ‘‘it is possible to convert a toy into a formidable weapon.” In an attempt to stop the unchecked sale of so-called ‘‘toy” pistols, a Bill has boon introduced iu the House of Commons.
