CHAMBER OE COMMERCE. PRESIDENT’S ANNUAL REPORT. Prom Our Own Correspondent. The president’s annual report, to be submitted to tho annual meeting of the Foxton Chamber of Commerce, to be held in Ross’s reams at 7 p.m. on Thursday, reads as follows: — The Chamber has given attention to many matters of importance both to the town and district during the year •with successful results. Coal through the port:—The Railway Department were communicated with recommending that coal be shipped through tho port, A reply was received requesting tho Chamber to submit the 1 name of a reputable shipping firm which would land 15,000 tons of coal at Poxton and asking for the cost of same on trucks. The Chamber was unable to obtain tho information and referred the matter to the Harbour Board. Nothing further was done in tho matter. Plood menace. —The attention of the
Moutoa Drainage Board was drawn to the flood menace at Whirokino but this body was unable to remedy the menace. Flaxmilling bonus.—The Chamber cooperated with the Flaxmillcrs’ Association in connection with tho ro-instato-ment of bonus on improved flaxmilling machinery, but so far the Government has done nothing iu this connection. New Courthouse. —The agitation of the Chamber for the erection of a new Courthouse has resulted in tho Minister of Justice giving a firm promise that tho building will be erected at an early date.
Motorists camping area.—Sign boards have been erected at tho Chamber’s request directing motorists to Foxton’s camping area on Victoria Park. The Borough Council could not accede to tho Chamber’s request to instal gas iu tho park. Continuous Telephone Service.—As a result of the Chamber’s efforts tho continuous telephone service is now in operation.
Rural delivery.—Tho Chamber’s efforts in this connection has resulted in a rural delivery being established between Foxton, Oroua Downs and Moutoa.
Hallway to seaside.—The Railway Department has been • communicated with urging that a light line be, constructed to the seaside. Co-operation in, tho matter has been promised by the member for the district and the Palmerston North Chamber.
Daylight Saving.—A'letter of congratulation was forwarded to Mr. T. K. Sidcy, M.P., on the passing of the Daylight Saving Bill and a request made to the Prime Minister and the-member for the district to give thoir wholehearted support to having tho Bill made a permanent measure.
Beach roads: —The Chamber communicated with tho Manawatu County Council, Harbour Board and member for the district in reference to an improved road to the seaside and asked that the Sanatorium road be constructed. As a result the Highways Board have declared the road a subsidiary highway. Mail matters. —Considerable attention was given to the subject of the arrival and departure of southern mails with the result that a more satisfactory arrangement now obtains. County roads. —The Chamber -communicated with the Manawatu County Counpil and Highways Board re tho unsatisfactory condition of the main highways within the county. So far nothing has been done of' a permanent nature on the FoxtonSandon and Fox-ton-Rangiotu highways, but those two roads will receive attention at an early date. ■ t The balance-sheet disclosed a credit balance of £4 2s Sd. Receipts totalled
£l9 Is Sd and wore made of as follows; —Balance at bank N.Z. 1/5/27 £2 5s 2d, Subscriptions £lO 10s Gil. Expcditure totalled £l4 19s.
