P.N. ORCHESTRAL SOCIETY

The Palmerston North Orchestral Society was established in ISM and has, with two small periods in recess, continued to present a series of concerts each year. In the early years of its existence it had no opposition in the way of pictures and its members had few calls on their services apart from the practices of the Society. Nowadays conditions are much altered and it is all the more to the credit of those who control the orchestra’s destinies that they are able to get together a band of 45 players. Undoubtedly a great deal of the Society's success is duo to the musical public who have always been most, liberal with their support, which support has placed the orchestra iu a sound position financially. Having nothing to worry them on this score attention has been concentrated on securing a full complement of players so that all sections of the orchestra can properly function. Given this, the 1 conductor can devote his energy to producing tlie programme numbers as near | perfect as possible. The good work Idono by Mr. Maurice Cohen over a period of many years is being eontinu ■ o<l by the Society’s present conductor, I Mr. ('. L. Mowlcm. For some years Mr, Mowlom was the very efficient loader lof (he orchestra and on Mr. Cohen’s Irotiremcnt in 102(5 it was only with considerable pressure and persuasion from the Mayers that he was prevailed upon to fill the important position of conductor. That ho lias made good was evident last year, and that he will conItinue to keep the Society nt a high jlevel is shown by the most, interesting programme selected for prseiitatinn by th Ro n ioty at. the first concert of (ho present season to be given at the Opera Mouse on Monday next
