Hobson's Choice
That Reform is not likely to repeat at the end of the year us sweeping victory of 1925, its most ardent adherents readily admit. all, they recognise there is the “swing of the pendulu which fS not likely to be held back again as it was in the case of Mr Seddon, by the sheer magnetism of the man, and in the case of Mr Massey by some of the same kind of magnetism and the divisions hi the ranks of the Opposition. Then there is lie plain lac ; that Mr. Coates, with all his good intentions and all his peisonal advantages, is neither Mr. Seddon nor Mr. Massey. Finally, above and beyond all this, is the Government’s failure to satisfy the Commercial community and its estrangement of a large section of ruial electors. But while admitting all this, the only half satisfied Reformers, still clinging to the party in their many thousands seem to have the best of the argument when an alternative to the pie sent Government is being discussed. The United New Zealand Political Party continue to bear up under the burden of its name and its undisclosed platform, but there is no indication, except from its own manifests, of its making any progress in popular favour.
