INCIDENT OFF FORMOSA.

Indicative of the manner in which the China seas and coasts are infested ■with pirates is an incident reported by the Japanese Nval Office. The TOnko Maru, a Japanese froightcr,. grounded on tho island' of Tantao, in tho Formosan Straits,; and wirelessed for assistance.
A dostroyer flotilla proceeded to the spot and found the vessel submorged except- for thou stern,, B.nd surrounded by over a hundred pirate ships. All descriptions of pirates woro clambering over tho unsutmierged portion on which tho naval men wore compelled to turn their machine guns on the pirates, driving them ashore. They discovered that the pirates had looted tho ship of everything detachable, and also the coal. Tho crew of 38 had escaped prior to the pirates' arrival, but they were later Tcscued unharmed.
