FOOTPRINTS AND CRIME
A new departure in crime detection is reported from Ceylon. According to the annual report of the Colony a footprint bureau has been started on the same lines as the fingerprint bureau. "This system of identification, which has not been developed in Europe, ■whore boots arc generally worn,” says the report, "peculiarly suitable for an Eastern country, where the majority of people go barefoot. In Ceylon, whore burglary, cattle thefts, and thefts which as a rule necessitate entry into buildings and other premises are so common. It is probable that in the future it will be possible to state from the examination of the ridges on a footprint, that it is the footprint of a particular person. Such evidence should bo of greatest value to the police and to the court in investigating the case.”
