TEACHERS’ INSTITUTE

ANNUAL MEETING OF. MANAWATU BRANCH. Hr. W. A. Swinboura presided over the annual meeting of the Manawatu Branch of the Educational Institute on Saturday. The annual report recorded a membership of 117 which constituted a record since the inception of the branch as an independent unit of the N.Z.E.I. at the present time there were very few teachers in the district that were not members. The funds of the branch were in a satisfactory position, there being no liabilities and a credit of £37. During the year the branch had lost the services of Miss Mowbray and Mr. de Berry, both of whom had taken an active interest in the work of the branch for many years. The thanks of the members were due to the Technical School committee for free use of rooms for meetings and to Messrs. J. A. Nash and J. Linklator, M'sP. for their sympathetic interest in matters affecting the welfare of the teachers and their valuable assistance in educational legislationj also to Mr. A. W. Thompson auditor. Election of Officers. President, Mr. H. G. Gabites; vicepresident, Mrs. Eggersj secretary, Mr. G. E. Espiner; Eon. auditor, Mr.' A. W. Thompson; committee, Miss Chapman, Messrs. Moore, Campbell, Sivinbourn, Joblin and Thompson; delegates to Central Committee, the President, Mrs. Eggors and Mr. Swiabourn. Messrs,. W. A. Swinboura and S’. C. Campbell were nominated as representatives to the N.Z.E.I. and Mr, W. E. Hird (Taihapo) as grading appeal advocate. Considerable discussion ensued upon the loss of holiday pay in cases where teachers were absent from school for more than one week without pay. The penalty imposed by the regulations, was one-fifth and it was considered that such an action by the department was quite inhuman. Teachers were not absent from school unless through circumstances beyond their control, such as sickness. It was finally decided to leave the matter in the hands of the management committee to deal with. The meeting also asked the executive to consider the matter of moving for an amendment of the Act so as to allow teachers, at present bebarredfrom joining the Superannuation fund to do so. Complementary references were made to the work of the secretary,! Mr G. H. Espiner. • Several new members were nomin-| ated. j The next meeting was fixed for; April 14 when remits for conference will be considered.
