HUIKAI BRINGS OFF BIG SURPRISE AT WOODVILLE
THE RACING DESCRIBED. panorama Again. Panorama who led the field home on the first day was looked on as the best of good things for the Hopelands Hurdles, carrying £257 of a very small pool. Polyphemus was next best backed with £217, while the others were at a good price. Axle was the eariy leader, followed by Polyphemus, Sir Moment, Blue Peter and Panorama. Axle led over the first hurdle and thence into the straight and past the stands, the order following leaving the straight being Sir Moment, Polyphemus, Blue Peter and Panorama. Polyphemus moved up a place going into the back and led from Sir Moment, Axle, Blue Peter and Panorama. Axle was finished at the back dropping right out of tho hunt. Panorama started to improve •on the bend, and was third to Polyphemus and Sir Moment at the straight entrance. Panorama had assumed the lead at the last obstacle and went on to win easily by three lengths from Blue Peter. Sir Moment another three lengths away got up to beat Polyphemus for third stake by a nose. Maui—Long Overdue. The Novice Plato saw the longoverdue Maui, ridden by E. Eeed, bring off his first winning effort. Maui was firm favourite carrying 479 tickets. There was a big drop to Molong (£226) and Vindication (£210). Vindication and Eolcx showed a disinclination to go up to the tapes, but after a short delay a good dispatch was effected, Ecd Bank showing out from Molong, Vindication, Skyridcr, Liloek, Maui, Purseful and Timi Inihi. Golden Egg was last to move. At tho bend Molong had gone up to tho front from Vindication, while Timi Inihi had moved into third berth, followed by Eed Bank, Skyrider, Liloek and Maui. Vin di cation led into tho straight, with Molong Timi Inihi, Skyridcr, Liloek, Maui and Tanakaha all handy. The field jostled a lot coming down the straight, Liloek being shut right in on the rails when moving forward to get through. Maui came up on the outer and finished full of running to beat Timi Inihi by a good length, Liloek who had got through, being a bare nose away. Then came Vindication, Skyrider, Molong, Snecrer, Tanakaha and Red Bank. , Liloek was the unlucky horse of the field and would probably have won if she could have got through earlier. As it was it looked as if Kcmball’s fiily had got up in time for second stake. Maui missed the congestion in the straight, and was brought well along by E. Eeed. Huikai Springs Surprise
Huikai sprang a mild surprise in tlie Autumn Handicap, for "winch the public could see nothing but David Garrick, instrusting him with 587 tickets, there being a big drop to Blimp (£387) and the bracket (£275). The "winner and second iiorscs were beyond the limit. There was no delay at the barrier, Epistle leading out from Huika). Blimp, Arrow Dad, Royal Game, Capitulation, David Garrick, Black Mint and Twink. The order was unchanged into the back, but Capitulation was moving up on the outer. Along the back Blimp lost his position being in fifth berth at the bend. David Gar-, rick did not begin to improve until on the bond, and Blimp was still losing way. Epistle and Arrow Lad led into the straight from Capitulation. Huikai, Blimp and David Garrick. In the run from the distance Huikai had too many guns for the leaders getting through -in time to win by a neck from Capitulation; who also had joined up very fast. Epistle was third a h«td away. Then came David Garrick, Arrow Lad, Kilmiss, Blimp and Black Mint. Royal Game was last. Huikai was well placed throughout, and his final effort was up to his reputed brilliant track work of six weeks ego, and his winning stylo on tho East Coast circuit. Blimp failed badly. David Garrick was too lato in getting to the front bunch. Aston Outclasses. Public confidence was not misplaced in tho Mangnpapa Handicap for which Aston earned £047, there being a big drop to Par Money (£241) and Lady Cynthia (£203). Tho big chestnut never left any doubt as to tho issue’ winning from end to end in spite of
Miss Pat’s a Bigger Aston } Panorama and Mooregas Again In line weather and before a good attendance the Woodville Jockey Club concluded its Autumn Meeting on Saturday- when the attractive card presented was productive of some very interesting racing. The fields on the whole were smaller than on the opening day, and a fair share of the favourites saluted the judge. The track was in improved order, and good times were recorded. Three horses who came home on the opening day were first past the post again on Saturday—Panorama, Aston, and Mooregas. The totalisator put through £12,972 for the day, an increase of £23 on the corresponding day last year. The total for tho meeting was £26,142, against £26,337 last year, a decrease of £195.
his 10.2 impost. Par Money played up at tho barrier and was left with Maureen. Aston led out from Shining Star, , Grey Mist, Lady Moon Arch Arrow, j Silver Tray and Lady Cynthia. Aston , was still going easily on tho bend, where Par Money made a fast run on the outside from tjio back being in ( fourth berth at the straight behind , Aston, Shining Star and Grey Mist. , The favourite simply cantered in a length and a-half ahead of Silver Tray J who had come up fast down tho | straight to beat Shining Star by throo- ’ quarters of a length. Arch Arrow was ’ fourth then came Lady Cynthia, Grey Mist, Maureen, Cavity and Hymestra- , son, with Lady Moon and Par Money ’ last. The imported gelding won so easily as to indicate that there is a big future before him. He is a big sort whom weight will not trouble. What Sometimes Happens! Shut in on the rails is tho brief story of the Telegraph Handicap—i Webster on March On hemmed the careful Eliis in on Crown Area and kept him there behind the field till it was too late. Crown Area was established the hottest favourite of the meeting being entrusted hy tho public with £7OS, while there was fair support for Sarchco (£323) and Eoyal Ceres (£325). The winner was at a long price. Eoyal Ceres began best from Lin Arlington, Miss Pat, Sarchco, March On and Crown Area. At the bend Lin Arlington and Sarcheo went to the front, while Crown Area ran up inside March On and then could not get out without dropping back. Lin Arlington led into tho straight from Miss Pat and Sarchec, March On still hemming in the favourite. Miss Pat ,camc away once they were lined up for home. Crown Area got out just before the distance to give chase. The Acre Lady however had too much left in her over the short bit that remained, winning by a length and a-half, Crown Area being four lengths ahead of Royal Ceres, Sarcheo nest, then Lin Arlington and March On. The favourite drew the rails and though he got out well quickly dropped back to last. From there the tale has been told. Onco hemmed in on the big striding gelding Ellis was in a holeless dilemma. Crown Area is not one who can he moved about sharply once in his stride. He made up a lot of leeway however when he was got off the rails. Ho mowed down all but tho winner very quickly, and finished very impressively. Miss Pat has shown her paces before but this is her first win in open class. She was nicely handled by apprentice Robinson. Thirteenth For Gasbag. The field in the Debutante Stakes was reduced to a bare two-dividend contest by the defection of Gold Bag. Amplifier with E. Eeed up was made favourite with £6lB, while Mooregas claimed 523 tickets in support. All elso was at a price. Agreeable was disagreeable at the tapes, and delayed the starter. Mooregas on tho rails was quickest to move out followed by Millais, Amplifier, Spcarmain, Agreeable, Australis and Mount Shannon. Millais ran up to Mooregas on the outer at the bend, and the two led into the straight from Amplifier, tho rest well back. Mooregas was not bustled over the last furlong to win with consummate ease from the favourite by a length, Millais being a length and a-half further back. Then came Australis, Agreeable, Mount Shannon and Spcarmain. Mooregas’ win was decisive. Ho was never bustled at any stage and set a precedent by loading from end to end. His was the only win for G. New’s ‘ stable on ihe day. He make? the thirteenth victory for the progeny of Gasbag, this season. His rider, the apprentice Broughton, handled his mount brilliantly on each day and is a iad who will make good. He knows where his field is in ia race, and many youngsters could take a lesson from him in this matter. Cosmetic Easily. In the preliminary of the Maharahara Handicap, the rider of Dc Luxe, P. Burgess was thrown hard by a sudden swerve of his mount before the stand, but an ambulance call was unnecessary W. Bagby replaced him in the race. Cosmetic was a warm favourite, claiming £657, with good'support for Tres- ! ham (£39.1) and Bonhomrao (£386). Tn . a quick dispatch Willow Wai led out
from Cosmetic, Cerf, Tresham, Bonhommo, Lady Gay, and Dc Luxe. Willow Wai made a break across the top, while Bonhommc moved up to third and Lady Gay improved. Willow Wai led Bonhomrae and Cosmetic into the straight, with Tresham on the outside and Lady Gay getting through near the rails. Cosmetic came away in the run home to win by two lengths from Lady Gay, Tresham a nose away full of running. Then came Willow Wai, Bonhomme, Dc Luxe and Cerf. Punters On It Again. u
Tho defection of Spcarmiss left a five-horse field to fight for the dividend in the Kumcroa Handicap. From the backers’ point of view tho race was all over, The Swell carrying the most money of any horse during the meeting (£815). Vigilance (£330) was next sought after. Tho Swell and Aurora Borealis got tho best of the | start, Wl going past the stands Vigilance ran to tho front and led into tho back from Aurora Borealis, Sandburr, Tho Swell and Bed Fuchsia. Vigilance kept Aurora Borealis and Sandburr on the outside along the back, but fell away across the top. The Swell closed up on the bend. Aurora Borealis led into the straight just ahead of Tho Swell, with Eod Fuchsia coming, Sandburr and Vigilance crying quits. The Swell quickly settled the leader in the run to the post, winning on the bit by two lengths from Bed Fuchsia who was another two lengths ahead of Aurora Borealis. Sandburr and Vigilance were a long way back. PACING IN DETAIL. HOPELANDS HUBBLES HANDICAP 1 PANORAMA (Panmurc —Overall); Mrs. H. E.
