A Dunedin Press Association message states that the estate of late Mr. Charles Speight, brewer, has been sworn for probate at about £250,000. At the Auckland Police Court Sclwyn Mays, solicitor, was fined. £SO for failing to have his trust account audited. Mr. A. A, Hawker, for many years a resident of Bunnythorpe and now of Hamilton was a visitor to the township and sports during the week. At yesterday's meeting of the Plunket Society general regret was expresesd at the losing o£ the services of Miss Thompson. ; who for some time has been doing good work here as a Plunket nurse. Intending exhibitors at the Hawke’s Bay A. and P. Society’s Autumn Show which is- to take place on -the 14th March arc reminded that all entries close with tho Secretary, 'Wednesday next, February 29. Rev. J. D. Me.Arthur, of Levin, has- just been appointed Superintendent Minister of Cuba Street Methodist Church Mr and Mrs Me. Arthur and family will arrive in Palmerston North about April 10th, and he will be inducted into his new charge the same week. Rev. Harold T. Peat, who for tho past five years, has been in charge of Cuba Street Methodist Church, has just, been appointed Superintendent Minister of Tlmaru. Mr and Mrs Peat and family expect to leave Palmerston North on April 2nd and he will be inducted into his new charge the following week. A Vancouver cable reports the Waratahs had an enthusiastic welcome on arrival. f Satoday’s opening match will bo against Vancouver representatives. The ground is in perfect condition and a huge crowd is certain. The second game will be against University on Wednesday. There will be one game at Victoria before the visitors sail on March 7. A man named Thomas Joseph Penton appeared before Messrs R. Edwards and G. H, Espiner J’s. P.. in tho Magistrate’s Court yesterday morning on a charge of the theft of a wallet and £29 tho property of Thomas Muir Fairley On the application of the police, accused was remanded to Wellington where he will appear on March 3rd.
A number of delegates to the United Fire Brigades’ Conference which opens in Now Plymouth on Monday passed through Palmerston North yesterday. The conference will be attended by representatives of practically every lareje station in New Zealand and important matters in connection with fire fighting will bo discussed. Foreman T 3. Little will be the Palmerston North delegate to the conference. The unemployment figures for the week ending February 18 show a decrease over the figures for the preceding week. For the week ending the 11th instant a total of 62 men were on the books of the Labour Department, Forty-three of these were married men with 123 dependants. During the week ending the 18th, the total dropped to 56 of whom 40 were married with 89 dependants. Uprooting in its path a largo post in the Middleton yards, a railway engine plunged down a twelve foot bank ripped through a barbed wire fence and came to rest five yards out on Matipo Street yesterday afternoon, Had the driver and fireman noi jumped clear the accident might have ended fatally. The damage to the engine is slight, but difficulty will be experienced to get it back to the track. The Railway Department advertise cheap fares and train arrangements in io-day’s issue in connection with the Dannevirko races.
