PAHIATUA

LAD BEFORE COURT. (From Our Own Correspondent.) Arnold Spencer Wilton, a Weraroa boarded-out inmate in the employ of Mr A. E. Brown, of Hamua, was brought before Justices of the Peace yesterday morning on two charges of indecent assault, and also of breaking and entering and theft. He was remanded to appear before the Stipendiary Magistrate at Pahiataa on March Ist. Pahiataa Dairying. Inquiries show that the prices ruling for December at co-operative factories in the Pahiatna and Woodville districts were fully maintained for the month of January, namely 1/6 per pound for butterfat for cheese, and 1/3 for finest for butter-making. The percentage of decrease in the j quality of butterfat ■ coming forward , on account of the dry weather is about one-third over the whole supply. Whilst the conditions have .been somewhat depressing for dairymen, there is considered to bo some encouragement for optimism regarding ( the future. The January shipments of butter amounted to two million boxes in excess of those for the corresponding month of last year, and , the reduced supplies now prevailing should have' the effect of steadying market prices. It is understood that no less than 93 per cent of butter on hand is being bold by factory directors for shipment oh open consignment. 3 Cheese sold during January realised from 8d per lb. to 8 5/9d per pound f.o.b. Locally, no portion of the aJnuary-May outputs have been sold forward, mainly owing to inability to estimate: quantities, which -will be available for sale Flower Show. The annual show of the Pahiatna Horticultural and Industrial Society held on Tuesday whs" very successful. The exhibits of flowers and vegetables were, in view of the prevailing drought,' highly creditable in quantity and quality, whilst- the display of cooking and handiwork was well up to the high standard of former years. The attendance: of the public was excellent, and' the financial results are regarded as very satisfactory . .. Another fortnight’s dry weather will see the completion of the new Mangatainoka bridge ; The approach on the Woodville side is almost finished, and the last span on the.Pahiatna side is rapidly approaching completion.
