MACBETH MODERNISED
PRODUCTION IN LONDON. TIN HATS AND PvED CROSS. LONDON, February 9. Following upon the production of Shakespeare’s “Hamlet” in modem dross in Britain and America, “Macbeth” was brought up to date last night, at the Court Theatre by Sir Barry Jackson's Birmingham Repertory Theatre players. It seemed like a war story. Macbeth appeared in kilts, and Lady Macbeth was a sMngled product of 1928. It was noticed that she swallowed tablets to soothe her frayocf nerves. The background for the appearance of the witches was a broken windmill, and the vicious chatter of . machinegun fire. ■ Malcolm, son of tho murdered Duncan, was dressed in tho uniform of a modern general, complete with red tabs, brass hat, and varnished jack-boots. He might have been a divisional conimonder on leave from France. A wounded sergeant in “tin” bat, muddied khaki, and puttees, told Ms 'story until he collapsed from loss of blood and was carried out on a stretcher by Red Cross details. The fight at tho end, in keeping with the production, was waged with modern firearms. Tho audience war very appreciative of the modernising of Shakespeare, and Lady Macbeth’s curse was quite as bloodcurdling as in the orthodox sotting.
