FARMERS AT CRICKET

MATCH AT MABTON Glorious cricketing -weather, perhaps rather too hot for the untrained, greeted the annual fixture between teams representing the Wanganui Farmers’ Union and the New Zealand Farmers’ Co-operative Distributing Co. Ltd., played at Marten cricket ground on Monday. The men off the land were determined to achieve a victory this year, avenging their previous defeats, and in this way they were eminently successful. Going to the wicket first, they piled up 260 runs before the last man was dismissed late in the afternoon. Thomson and James placed 123 on the board for the first wicket, scoring 69 and 68 -respectively. Mr. Extras also contributed a useful 50. The hard pitch lent little assistance to Holland who bowled steadily, but with much hard luck. The Distributing Company responded with 182, leaving their opponents victors by 78 runs. Holland played a solid innings for 69 and he was ably assisted by Broad with 43. Waters snr and Thomson jnr were the most successful trundlers for the country team whose bowlers wore backed up by accurate fielding. The following arc the detailed scores:— Wanganui Farmers’ Union.
