A FAREWELL EVENING TO MISS STEELE
A. most' delightful inpromptu evening was'given as a farewell to Miss Steel, of England, by the croquet players on Wednesday night , Mrs, E. V. West of Victoria Avenue : . lending her beautiful homo for the occasion. Sirs. .Bhodes-Williams of , Wellington and Mrs. Lowery, of the Kclburn Croquet Club, were the hostesses.' . Mrs. Cook, a veteran croquet player of Wellington, presented ■■■'MiSS Steel with an exquisite bouquet of roses. An apology, was sent by, the President of the Manawatu Club expressing his regret at being unable, to. bo presest. During the evening the . guests assembled .in the ballroom which tvas; most artistically decorated ). with colored streamers and Chinese lanterns, which produced., a , mpst. wonderful, 'Colour effect, and danced''until a late hour.; Miss Jean Muir during the evening gave a graceful- exhibition' “of modern dancing/ After supper Archdeacon Creed.' Meredith,’ in a delightfully humbrous speech caused much merriment, ■ presented '' the -guest" of honor with a mas'edt in the forin of a ■gold signet ring suitably inscribed'as a memciith'from'.‘the croquet, ■players for their admiration of “Miss Steel not merely as a croquet "player but '-for her charming personality and her thorough- sportsmanship an'd the indefinable something that is so characteristic of Miss .Steel. ' •' "■ Miss Steel very feelingly and under evident stress of emotion suitably replied. The party .then‘sang“for; she’s a jolly good fellow," and Auld Lang Syne.
