MILITARY DAMP. j ;; The oth D Battery, "Wellington., who aro in camp on the racecourse for annual training held an “ at home ” on Wednesday last. The programme commenced with a parade and inspection by the Officer Commanding (Captain Keane) after which sports items which were keenly contested wore carried out. Some novelitems and, competitions ! wore staged and proved very amusing. The battery fired a' salvo ~ during the afternoon. A delightful afternoon tea was served by the men. Captain Keane took the opportunity to thank the people of Foxton for their hospitality. The Mayor (Mr. M. E. Perrcau) on behalf c£ the citizens thanked the officers and men for the afternoon's entertainment and stated they were always welcome to Poston. The officers in charge are Captain Keane, 0.0., Captain Pollard (Palmerston North;, Lieutenants Brown, Turner and Lowe. The Rev. Watson, of St. Peter’s, Wellingtn, is" Padre. Dr. Stout is medical officer and Lieut. Gibson is in charge of the canteen. ' - CONCERT AND DRAMATIC FARCE. This entertainment organised hy No. 3 group of the Plunket Committee for the Society's .funds was given in the Town Hall on Thursday evening to a large and appreciative audience. Every item received a welt-merited ■ encore. The first half of the programme was ■ occupied with a solo by Mrs. S. Barber, step dance and song, “Me and My Shadow,” Miss N. Pritchard; musical monologue,, Mr. Milmer; Scottish dancing to the pipes. Miss Ashby; quartette, "Prof undo. Basso,” Mrs. Yeo, Mrs.. Garment, Mr. Barron and Mr. Poole, who gave fop, an encore, "Sweet and Low”; Eastern ballet, Mrs. Goodman’s pupils (soloists, Misses N. Pritchard and A. Eoore), the setting and dancing being beautifully done; bass quartette, Messrs. „ Heyes B. Walls, J. Newth and Newth; dancing duet. Mrs. Goodman's pupils, Misses Olga Saville and Audrey Bar ron; bagpipe selection, Pipe-Major McKenzie (Palmerston North), A sketch " The B Family,” featuring a Pluiiket baby and including many local hits by Mr. G. F. Smith, Mrs. Barron and Miss I. Patterson brought down the house. The second half was occupied by a farce entitled " My Turn Next,” the parts being taken by Mesdames Yeo and Barron, Miss Delaney, Messrs. Heyes, H. Hornhlow, W. Bullard and Perrcau. This was admirably staged and the parts well sustained. The orchestra were Misses Delaney and Patterson, Messrs. E. Graham and J. Newton, accompanists, Mesdames Goodman and Delaney. At the conclusion the committee— Mesdames D. B. Barron (organiser), B. Boore, J. Chrystall, Too, G. P. ■ Smith and A. Stevenson—entertained the performers and friends at. supper on the stage. Mr. M. E. Pcrreau, Mayor and chairman of the Plunket Society Advisory' Board, ■ thanked all those who had worked so splendidly to make the entertainment the success it i had been. On behalf of the Society he expressed appreciation fos the assistance given in raising funds. The Mayor called on Mrs. B. McMurray, hon. secretary of the Society, to speak. Mrs. McMurray . endorsed the Mayor’s remarks and said it Was gratifying to see the sympathy and interest being taken in the Plunket work, which was so well worth doing. She congratulated Mrs. Barron and her committee on the Splendid results they had obtainedk Mr. Barron complimented Mrs. Goodman and her pupils for their items; Mr. G. F. Smith congratulated Mr. and Mrs. Barron and the‘committee on their successful efforts; -.Mrs. Barron had written the parts for tho sketch, .( Tho B Family.” Mrs. Barron stated that she and her committee had received loyal support and it would be unfair to mention names where .all had worked so willingly- The singing of «< Anld Lang Syne ” concluded a successful function. Returns are not yet complete hut the Society is assured of a substantial addition to its funds. "The secretary desires to acknowledge the donation of £1 from Mr. J . McKnight to tho Society’s funds.
