WAITUNA WEST

(From Our Own Correspondent.) - The Waituna West School picnic -was held on Monday, February loth. The committee engaged one of Madge Bros.’s large buses, which, packed to its utmost capacity with excited youngsters and accompanied by some half dozen private cars, conveyed the party to Tangimoana, leaving the town ship at about !) a.m,. The weather was perfect* • and most of the young — and some of the not so young folk enjoyed, to the full the facilities for bathing. After lunch the races were run oil' the winners receiving cash prizes. During the afternoon some of the party walked out to the heach, quite a number of the children thus obtaining their first glimpse . of and enjoying their first dip in the sea. The bus ride in itself was quite a novelty to some of the children, and the delay on the way home caused by a blow out was accepted as part of the fun. The committee very thougliCi’uy provided free ice cream for the children, which was very much appreciated. On arrival at Waituna about S p.m. the children of their own volition called for throe cheers for Mr Penh, and the singing of ‘‘For He’s a Jolly Good Fellow” quite made up in sincerity and heartiness what it lacked in music. The thanks of all concerned arc duo to the committee for one of the most enjoyable school picnics ever held in Waituna.

Quito a gloom was cast over this district by the news of (lie tragic death of Air Trevor Shannon, which was caused by the accidental discharge of liis gun when getting over a fence. The heartfelt sympathy of a wide circle of friends is extended to the widow •and family and other relations of tiro deceased gentleman who was one of our best-known and most popular residents. Arrangements arc well in hand fertile local flower show which is to be held in the hall on the 20th February, and also for the sports, which arc being held in the school grounds on, March 3rd. At the meeting of the sports club, a motion of sympathy was passed with (he relatives of (he late Messrs J.Xorlhcotl, It. 0. French and P. Small all three having been life members of the club
