N.Z. CROQUET TOURNAMENT
MISS STEEL CHAMPION. Yesterday saw the conclusion of (he Croquet Tourney. The weather has been fine throughout the meeting, and competitors were showing signs of the strenuous play which has lasted continuously for ten days —a tax surely upon anybody’s nerves and strength. Ladies’ Championship Singles. Miss Steel (England) beat Miss Hosketh (Auckland). Miss Hosketh plays a decidedly finished game, seldom failing in any of her long shots. Miss Steel playing beautifully won 26—9, 26—5. Presentation of Trophies. Owing to Miss Steel having made arrangements to leave Palmerston North the presentation of trophies was held at the conclusion of the ladies’ singles, although there were several other games to bo played. Mr. J. Murray (president) made the various presentations and made a reference to the wonderful success of the tournament. Miss Steel was called forward to receive the Ladies’ Champion Cup. Miss Steel has tvon every section in which she competed. The New Zca land Council and its associates, Mr. Murray declared, were highly honoured to have Miss Steel’s name engrav cd on their coveted trophy. Her personality had endeared her to all with whom she had come in contact, and it had been a very great pleasure to have her with them at the two chief Now Zealand fixtures. Other prize-winners were Miss Hosketh (runner-up in the ladies ’ championship); Arch. CreedMeredith and Mrs. Smith (runners-up in the handicap doubles), Airs. Jamieson (winner of the junior handicap) and Mrs. Griffiths (runner-up in the junior handicap). Results Of Other Matches. Archd. Crecd-Meredith and Mrs. Smith (1/2) beat Mrs, Honorc and Mrs Jameson (13) 26—21. Handicap singles: Senior, Miss Hesketh (1/2)* beat W. J. Robertson (3) 26—17.
