CENSOR HOLDS UP TE KOOTI TRIAL FILM
(Per Press Association). WHAKATANE, Last Eight. Considerable indignation was expressed by the Whakatanc Eilms Ltd., owing to the censor holding up the To Ivooti trail film. Telegrams were dispatched to Wellington in : n endcav to have the 'film released in time to fill the Auckland engagements to-morrow night. A reply has been received from Mr. Hockly, M.P., stating that the authorities arc anxious the film should not offend any Maori susceptibilities. Consequently it has been seen by Sir Maui Pomaro and other Maori members. The Eiuatu Church has asked to bo allowed to see the Him before its release. A delegation arrives at Wellington on Eriday. A meeting- of the directors of the company this afternoon decided to Mr. Hockley. M.P., emphatically objecting to the natives viewing the film as it is considered grossly unfair to allow tho censor to bo influenced and insisted on withdrawing the film until the company could be represented at Wellington.
The following’ wire was also sent to Hr. Coates: “Film Te Kooti trial held tip by censor for criticism by representatives of Maoris. Company strongly objects to censor allowing judgment to bo Influenced particularly without company being represented. t\cw Zealand film production seriously menaced by such unfair action Serious financial loss and historic interest at stake. Please do not allow viewing by anyone without Company being represented. We consider censorship confidential and entirely in hands of censor. Please see our interests protected.’’
