FAIR AND REASONABLE VALUATION OF LAND
AMENDMENT BILL BEFORE HOUSE. [“Times” Special.] [Prom Our Parliamentary Reporter.] WELLINGTON, Last Night. In moving thc second reading of the Valuation of Land Amendment Bill the Minister of Lands, the Hon. A. D. McLeod, said that there had been a good deal of criticism against the Department in respect of thc value placed on land and also the methods of having grievances looked inte. Mi'. P. Fraser (Wellington Central); “ Thc Assessment Court is working satisfactorily, is it not ? ” The Minister; “ That is so, generally speaking, so far as boroughs arc concerned. - But the Court >s certainly not giving satisfaction in rural districts.” He continued that he was not going to attempt to deny that a good deal of rural land in New Zealand at the present time w r as too highly valued. The Department was making every endeavour to cope with the tremendous number of applications that were coming from local bodies throughout the Dominion for immediate revaluations and the. staff to deal wEth the work was being increased.
The suggestion had been made that the Valuation Department was aiming to ensure that a fair, reasonable and true valuation of land was established.
