DAY OLD CALVES

DAIRi COMPANIES SCHEME NEARING COMPLETION. At its meeting yesterday, the executive of the Manawatu and West Coast Dairy Companies’ Association gave further consideration to its scheme for the disposal of day-old calves. The Fcilding Bacon Coy. wrote., stating that it was prepared to handle up to 400 calves per day at 4s per head and in the event of the calves being delivered at Feilding, an additional Is per head would be allowed to cover cartage and freight. The net profits would be shared as follows: The Bacon Coy. to take the first Is or portion thereof, the Dairy Companies forwarding calves to take the second Is or portion thereof and the balance to bo divided equally, i.e., the Bacon Coy. to take half and the other half divided amongst the dairy companies in proportion to the number of calves sent in. The profits would not bo declared until the final payments had been received. Payments to the Dairy Companies would Ec made on the loth of each month which would enable the Dairy Companies to distribute same to suppliers on 20th of each month. If a farmer preferred to sell direct for cash and so forfeit all claim to any profit, the Bacon Company was prepared to pay 4s 6d per head with Is per head extra if calve s were delivered at Feilding. The Bacon Company was also prepared to send its own lorry to depots to bo arranged with the Dairy Companies, .at a charge of Is per head provided the depots were on a main road and not more than 35 miles

from Fcildlng. Only fully matured calves would bo considered. The executive thought tho offer quite a good one except that the straight-out cash price should be 5s instead of 4s Gd. On the motion of Messrs. T. Ranford and T. W. Tcale, it was decided, therefore, to write to tile .Fcildlng Bacon Coy., suggesting that the increase be granted. The 1 matter will be then re-considcred at the annual meeting on July 5.
