HOLBEN, HUBBARD AND CO. LTD.

MECHANICAL AND ELECTRICAL ENGINEERS, C 7, RANGITIKEI STREET. I This progressive • firm my.tes all visitors to He Show to also inspect their workshops, and see in operation the latest xnacninery ror the economic performance or engineering work or all descriptions, and in particular the spe. cial plant installed ror motor-car and lorry re-conditionlng, in which they are specialising. On entering their representative was at once struck with the excellent lay-out, on the right being an erection bay 160 feet long, with Denches down one side, the whole being served with an overhead travelling crane, for the quick and easy handling of all heavy parts. On the left lies the machine shop, containing, in addition to the ordinary equipment of lathes, shaping machines, drills, shearing and punching machines, screwing machines, and metal sawing machines, the special machines, of which inspection is particularly invited, h'irst of these comes the universal milling mahine, a massive tool of the very latest design, which will manufacture gearwheels of every description, from the large spur wheel of 42 inches diameter to the very smallest cat or cycle gear. Every description of toothed wheel can be accurately machine-cut, including worm gears, spiral gears, beval gears, and helical gears, and it is also extremely useful for cutting splines and keyways. Next is the Churchill cylinder grinder, a very fine machine especially constructed for the, accurate re-grinding of car and lorry cylinders. This machine works to the very finest limits of accuracy, and worn cylinders that have been reground are quite as good as new. Of course, oversize pistons, with new rings and gudgeon pins have to be used, and the firm carries a large stock of these ready for fitting. The electric welding plant is one of the latest additions, and is especially worthy of Inspection. It consists of a 10 h.p. motor driving a special generator, which, in turn, supplies the current at low pressure required for arc welding. This system is extremely useful for repairing and rebuilding broken and worn machine parts the electric arc providing the most intense and localised heat available for the purpose. The smithy and spring-making department is also worthy of some attention, being well equipped with power hammer and hydraulic press. A late addition- to the plant is the electrical repair department, where the rewinding of motors, dynamos and coils of every description is carried on. Here can bo seen car and lorry magnetos, generators, starting motors, and batteries undergoing needful repairs, as well as the manufacture of new coils for commercial power motors and heating elements for ranges and radiators. This department is also well equipped with instruments and machine tools for the particular work in hand.
