“HE SHOT ME; ARREST HIM”
GIBRALTAR COLONEL KILLED BY LIEUTENANT. [By Electric Cable-Conyright.] [Aust. and N.Z. Cable Association.] (Received Friday, 5.5 p.m.) LONDON, April 7. Colonel J. Fitzgerald, Commanding the second battalion of the East Surreys at Gibraltar paid his usual afternoon visit to the orderly room accompanied by the adjutant. ' The latter on departing noticed Lieutenant Duffleld and asked him why he was there. Lieutenant Duffleld said he wished to see the colonel. The adjutant obtained permission and Lieutenant Duffleld entered. Presently shots were heard and tho colonel was found shot in the head. He said: “He shot me. Arrest him.” Soon after he died. Lieutenant Duffleld, who admitted his guilt, was arrested and placed In a mental ward. It Is understood that he was suffering from delusions. Officers say that he had no illfeeling towards the colonel, who recently complimented Duffleld on his good work. The British colony has cancelled all entertainments.
