CRIME CONCOMITANT OF TIMES OF STRESS

“BIRDS OF PASSAGE" WORKING AUCKLAND. [“Times" Special.] AUCKLAND, Last Night, “Crime against property goes hand in glove with times of , financial stress," said Superintendent Wohl* mann, referring to the frequency of burglary and theft in Auckland dur. ing the last few weeks. “It comes in' waves and when there is an increase in theft there is a decrease la drunkenness and offences attributed to insobriety," he added. Mr Wohlmann remarked that extensive unemployment always drove the weaker members of the com? munity to seek comfort or luxury by a life of crime. Burglary such as was now prevalent in Auckland was generally the work of “birds of passage," who “worked" the city until vigilance threatened them. Three burglaries occurred in Auckland on Monday evening.
