CENTRAL SCHOOL
MEETING OF COMMITTEE. At last evening’s meeting of tho Central School committee there were present Rev. H. T. Peat (in tho chair) Messrs. H. J. Canton, A. Clark, W. R. Mayes, A. H. Mills, F. Pycroftr, W. B. Willoughby, R. C. Reay and A. H. Fisher (secretary). The Wanganui Education Board wrote, advising that it proposed to I appoint Miss P. Govan, of College street school, to tho position of infant I mistress, which position had been rendered vacant by the resignation of Miss Haggett. Headmaster’s Report. * Tho headmaster (Mr. L. F. do Berry) reported that the roll number yesterday was 780 and tho average attendance for the quarter 695.6. Tbla was tho 'lowest that ‘the school had registered for some years, and had been caused by the prevalence of much sickness of a minor kind in the area. There were signs of the illness passing. Miss Bland had left on transfer to Terrace End school, and Miss Haggett had also left on March 31, having served tho school with distinction for nearly four years During the month tho following officials had visited tho school: Mr. Lqngworth, director of physical instruction, and the secretary and tho architect of tho Wanganui Board. .
Tho following pupils of the school had gained life-saving certificates: Elementary certificate: G. McMinn, 3. Richards, 11. Apatari, H. Wykes, K. Beals, H. Millard, Betty McDonald, Marjorie Mills, Gladys Simmonds. Bronze Medallions: H. Apatari, J. Richards. In this connection tho headmaster desired to compliment Mr. Wilton, of the school staff, upon the excellent work he had done in training tho school team. The thanks of tho school were due to Mr. A. Clark, for framing a picture, Mrs, H. Palmer, for repairing tho school flag, Mr. C. Turner, for rolls of paper,""and Messrs, Watsons, for blotting paper. “As this is tho last regular meeting of tho committee,” concluded the report, “I desire to place on record my sincere fhanks and tho thanks of the school to tho committee for tho very great interest every member has shown in the welfaro of the school and of the children, and to assure you gentlemen of our appreciation. Especially do f clesinj to make reference to the work of the chairman,'Mr. Peat and the secretary; Mr. Fishier.” The report was adopted, tbo’ chairman suitably acknowledging 1 the remarks made by the headmaster in regard to the work done ■by the ; committee. • . " ; • General. It was resolved that tho .headmaster be a'sked to convey to tho children successful in obtaining life-saving certificates and medallions, tho committee’s congratulations, and that tho secretary be instructed to write Mr. Wilton expressing tho committee’s thanks for his efforts in training the life-saving team. It was decided that tho committee should present to tho householders’ meeting a report of tho financial position of the committee at the end of tho financial year, and a report of the position when tho committee goes out of office.
A vote of thanks was accorded the secretary (Mr. A. H. Fisher) for his excellent work done in tho secretarial part of the committee’s, work.
Preliminary arrangements were made in connection with tho annual meeting of householders to be held on April 21. hominations to be considered at the meeting close on Thursday, April 14. . •
