FOXTON
WELCOME TO MU. & MRS. W. H. NICHOLAS. f (From Our Own Correspondent.) A public welcome was extended to Mr. and Mrs. W. H. Nicholas at the Masonic Hall on Wednesday evening. The Mayor (Mr. M. E. Perreau) pre-* sided and there was a good representative attendance. The Mayor spoke on behalf of the citizens and Rev. G. T. Brown, of Palmerston North, moderator for the Foxton charge since the Rev. F. McDonald’s resignation, spoke on behalf of the Wanganui Presbytery. He congratulated Foxton on obtaining the services of Mr. and Mrs. Nicholas. Mr. Nicholas was well known and greatly beloved by the Presbytery and ho felt that ho was fortunate indeed to bo ablo to place this charge in such capable hands. He wished them God-speed in the Master’s work. Captain Sanson extended a hearty welcome on .behalf of the Salvation Army. She felt sure everyone would rally round and do their best to make the stay’of Mr. -Nicholas and family a happy and successful one. She stressed the importance of all working together for tho ono great end. Mrs. Peryman (who apologised for the unavoidable absence of the Rev. Peryman) extended a sincere welcome on behalf of tho Methodists. She was glad to welcome co-workers for the Church universal. * Mr. J. K. Hornblow spoke for the, members and office-bearers and the session. He stressed the necessity of loyalty and co-operation. Ho assured Mr. Nicholas that in regard to finance the managers carried all the responsibility in this matter. On behalf of the / congyregatior. he welcomed Mr. Nicholas and family and trusted their stay with them would be happy and successful. Tho Rev. W. H. Walton (Anglican) extended a welcome on behalf of his church. * Ho urged the congregation to.do their share; if they did this, success was assured. Mr. Whitehead, of Palmerston North, also fjpoko. Mr. Nicholas, on behalf of himself and family, thanked- the Foxton peopll for the very hearty welcome which had been extended. They had already met quite a number of people and the very hospitable and sympathetic greeting they had received assured them that they were going to be very happy there. Hb was there to do the Master’s work and he prayed that he would bo enabled to do his part faithfully. Each and all should be prepared to give of' their best and all pull together. He was pleased to know that he would have the whole-hearted support of his office-bearers, which was essential to the -well-being of the church. Mr. Brown read a message from ono of the gentlemen who acted as supply during tho time Foxton charge was without a minister, wishing Mr. and Mrs. Nicholas success In their work. ’ During the evening items were given by Mrs. H. Downes, Messrs. D. R. Barron and Kingston (Palmerston North), Misses Patterson and M-. Downes and a recitation hy Captain Gibson. Supper was served by the ladies Guild members. Complimentary Social. On Wednesday evening the members of the Foxton Tennis Club met at the- residence of Mr. and Mrs. F. C. Hay to entertain Miss R. Barber, one of its members who is shortly to be married. - f A. very enjoyable evening was spent in and music. After supper, the President (Mr., R. McMurray) on behalf of the Cluh._ in presenting the guest of the evening with an electric kettle and electric toaster, referred to Miss Barber’s association with the Club, both as a player and on the social side. He was pleased that the Club was not losing her as a member and hoped that she would induce her future husband to come along for practice. Miss Barber, although she ’lived out of town, had been a good worker on the committee. It was a well-kn.own fact that good sports made good wives. On behalf of tho Club, he wished her heatlh and happiness in her new sphere. Mr. Hay endorsed the President s complimentary references to the guest. He noticed that when he played tennis the score was very frequently “love” and this should be a gobd basis on which to start married life. He sincerely wished Miss Barber health and happiness. Mr. H. Hornblow, on behalf of Miss Barber, thanked the Club for their good wishes and for their very handsome token of esteerii. It would bo a constant reminder of many happy associations wifji the Tennis Club and was thoroughly "appreciated. Cheers for tho guest and for air. and Mrs. Hay wore heartily given with musical -honours.
